If you like the beach don’t stay here!

The grounds were nice and there were animals to watch. The beach is awful! Rocks and lots of seaweed. The food was the same every day but the Japanese restaurant was amazing but you need a reservation to get in. Not a lot of choices. The beds were hard! Need to update the rooms. Pools were cloudy but the water park was not bad. The Sandos playa car beach resort was amazing! If you want a great beach and great food and entertainment stay there! I will stay there in the future!

Cheap caribbean was the issue

So the hotel/food was amazing. The beach was egh, however you had a 5 pools to choose from. The resort is HUGE so if you want to do everything the resort has to offer make sure you give yourself enough time. Now my main issue was cheap caribbean. I booked transportation to and from the airport, however trying to get a hold of the rep to get back to the airport was a nightmare. We did contact cheap caribbean and they NEVER responded to our email...So if you can find any of form of transportation please do, because the rep at Sando's was terrible and never at his desk to help you. It finally took us talking to the general manager to get the reps attention.

I really wanted to like this resort.....

But I left very UNDERwhelmed. The property itself is beautiful. It’s very big so bring comfortable shoes! There are several natural cenotes on the property that make for great photos. The largest one near the mail lobby allows snorkeling at various times throughout the day, but my favorite was back in the jungle area surrounded by rock and even an small underground cave. There’s a burro pen near the main lobby. Very cute but VERY stinky. The food was just okay. You have to make a reservation at the tepanyaki restaurant and I found it a little too convienient that the only availability they had (after getting our room number and pulling up our stay) was for our last night at the resort. We met a few other guest and same thing...only available date was the night before departing. There was a “wait” at every alacarte restaurant varying from 30 minutes to 90 minutes and service was terrible.....good luck getting refills even on fountain drinks. Upon arrival expect to be “greeted” by a staffer which is really just to try and talk you into attending a sales pitch. (We didn’t want to waste 90 minutes of our morning). Rooms were neat and cleaned daily without issue. Only tepid water in the shower though which was odd because both sinks had hot water. The AC is on a timer so there were several times during the stay I had to wake up and power it back on. Mixed drinks are very watered down. Your best bet is order an extra shot of whatever your having in your mixed drink (rum, tequila, vodka, etc). Otherwise you won’t get even slightly buzzed. Beautiful beach, but bring water shoes because it is rocky! The sandy places are great though, just the getting to them that was a bit treacherous. Tons of people on the beach trying to sell various things, from jewelry to excursions which gets a bit bothersome after the twentieth person approaches you while you’re trying to relax and enjoy the beautiful turquoise water. Decent for the money, but I doubt I’d revisit. Also, for an “eco resort” there were way too many smokers all over the place and I felt like everywhere I went I was breathing nasty secondhand smoke.

Good resort

As advertised, wild animals were frequently seen. Many will come to you and beg for food. There are lots of paths with different things to see on each one. If you are a little squeamish, avoid the suspension bridge. It's got a lot of bounce and a little twist to it. If you aren't, its' definitely worth walking across. The Mayan ruins on the property are interesting and worth the hike. Swimming in the sacred cenote was fun but it's small and won't take much time. Swimming in the crystal cenote is also fun but you have to wear a life jacket and can only swim when an attendant is on duty. There were many fish to be seen but not much else. The water park has six water slides for those who are not too short. They were OK. Not the best I've been on. One requires a tube and you have to wait until someone gives one up to get a tube. The staff were generally nice but expect many of them to speak very little English. the lobby staff, however, all seemed to speak English very well. The beach is nice but it was very windy while we were there. However, if you took a couple of steps inland past the palm trees, the wind dropped to no more than a gentle breeze. Snorkeling is largely a waste of time. There were a few fish, almost no living coral and the waves were quite choppy. The food, for the most part, was comparable to other resorts like this one. The steak/fish restaurant served a very nice rib eye, but be prepared to wait. If you get there early, you'll get a seat but the place fills up all at once so the kitchen is slammed. If you get there later, you'll have to wait for a seat. Unlike most resorts of this type, there are times when none of the main restaurants are open. The snack places will serve hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream but it you want something more during those hours, you're out of luck. The A/C in the Mexican restaurant either wasn't working properly or was set way too warm. The room was pretty hot the one time we tried it. In all, we enjoyed our stay. We found we didn't have to leave the hotel to enjoy our time.
