Mediocre

Beautifully landscaped grounds, nice staff. The loud pounding music at the main pool (on the beach) echoes everywhere. There is no escaping it. Followed by more loud music and yelling into a microphone during the evening show. The restaurants were not great, the seafood restaurant being the worst. Poor food quality. Also it is difficult to get reservations for the restaurants before 9pm. The buffet is the best option by far! If you have food allergies do not come to this resort. Everything was cross contaminated with gluten/dairy and nothing is labeled with ingredients so you have to guess what's what. No gluten free bread in a separate area like the Occidental Xcaret on the main land. Allegedly there is a dress code but it is not enforced. Men can wear swim trunks and tank tops in the restaurants. It looks very sloppy. This resort struck me as extremely understaffed. The staff, while friendly and helpful, seemed very rushed and stressed. I felt bad for them. I experienced long lines at all the bars despite the very hardworking bartenders. I am used to the Occidental Resorts prior to them being sold to Barcelo. I will not stay at a resort owned by Barcelo again. I ended up spending almost all of my time off the resort to get some peace and quiet. I requested a king sized bed but was given a room with 2 full size beds, one of which had a broken leg so the bed tilted. The shower drain was slow and backed up. Other than that it was very clean and tidy overall. One thing I must mention is I DO NOT WANT TO BUY A TIMESHARE. STOP ASKING. I am on vacation to relax and don't care about your sales pitch or free gift. Kind of a disappointment, stay somewhere else.

Relaxing Solo-Vacation

The resort was absolutely wonderful. The staff was warm and welcoming and even greeted me by name on subsequent days following my initial check-in. The grounds were wonderfully maintained as were the rooms. Mine included a lovely balcony that I watched the sunrise from each morning, a hot shower, daily room servicing and replenishing of the mini-fridge beverages, and a reliable electronic safe. I chose this resort given reviews that the beach was sandy and not rocky, typical of many other locations in Cozumel, and I was not disappointed. The beach was clean, sea-weed free, quiet, and the sand and water were each easy to walk-in barefoot. Truly gorgeous with plenty of beach chairs to go around with a choice to sit beneath shaded palm trees or a more open area for full sun soaking. Beach towels are easily checked out at the pool with a card given to you at check-in. I did not indulge in excursions given my preferences as I traveled alone, but there were many options including jeep tours, snorkeling, scuba, etc. easily accessible by taxi from the resort. My one and only criticism is that the food could have been better. I dined one evening at the Sonora Mexican restaurant and spent the remainder of the time at the buffets. I found the food to be quite bland with very limited options. I also wish there had been natural juices rather than the packaged orange/mandarin/pineapple/grapefruit offered. Overall, I would definitely stay again and if you're looking for a tranquil area of beach, this would be the place to choose.

For the price - very good

Each January my husband and I take a Friends Vacay with two other couples. For this vacation we are looking for a place that would meet the agreed upon budget. We have been traveling to the Caribbean and Mexico for the last 25 years and have stayed at a variety of All Inclusive Resorts from Sandals, Royalton, Alegro etc. - just for perspective. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the Occidental. We took the airport transfer service that is right outside the building. I can't remember the name but it begins with an "F". Not the taxis. It was $7 US per person. Going back you have to take a taxi which is $30 US/couple. We had requested rooms close to each other prior to arriving and sure enough our rooms were all on the same floor in building 20 (Royal). We were greeted upon arrival and given a ride to the Royal Reception area where the receptionist was excellent. We were all (3 couples) checked in and even had all our dinner reservations set up within 30 minutes. This resort is not your typical oceanview resort but you are in the midst of a mangrove/jungle type environment. For us it was a nice change from the typical beachfront view. If you are looking for a place that has views of the ocean this might not be the place for you, but we liked the change. The wildlife, as you will read in all reviews, I'm sure is really fun to watch. Food - we actually found the food very good - even the buffet. Our favorite were the Mexican and the Restaurant for the Royal guests. And surprisingly by Thursday - we weren't "sick of the buffet" as in most cases we have experienced at All Inclusives. We had an amazing young man - Alberto - at the buffets for breakfast and Lunch. He even set up the table at lunch for us to have a spot overlooking the ocean. We did the snorkeling tour with Nathan and he was wonderful. Not everyone in our group had snorkeled and he was sooooooo patient with us 60 something year olds. We ended our day in the hot tub - that wasn't always hot but served the purpose. The rooms were spacious and clean. Plenty of towels and washcloths (had read that was an issue for some). I really liked the bath products which included toothbrush, sewing kits, etc. Some attention to detail that is seen in higher end resorts was lacking but no big deal. They have chair pads for the outdoor seating and our room only had one pad in the closet. There is no room to hang things so draping your wet bathing suits on the tub didn't allow for things to dry very quickly. I ended up not feeling well the day before we left so I used room service and they were willing to give me things that were not offered on the menu. My only con for this resort - but when you look at the price we paid, it wasn't a huge issue. Beach/Pool area - it wasn't my favorite. It was fine but the pool - is small compared to most Caribbean/Mexican All Inclusive resorts. There is an "Adults Only" pool - even smaller and we never used as we wanted to be near the beach and this is in a more secluded area. The beach is also relatively small. Not much room to spread out. Members in our group got up early to find lounge chairs in the area we wanted but again I found it pretty compact. Would be amazing if they could take up some of the land next door and add more pool area and thus having more beach area. But it sufficed. I was also surprised that the snorkeling at the resort itself wasn't better. Nathan had mentioned that on certain days you can see a lot but not the week we were there. There were a few kids at the resort and it looked like the Kid Staff were having a good time with them. All-in-All it was a great week for a great price.

What value!

We had such a lovely week at the Occidental! I was worried at first about being in the jungle, and not having an ocean view, but it turned out wonderfully! The grounds were beautiful and we saw lizards, turtles, coati and iguanas on a daily basis. The walk to the beach was about 5 minutes, but very pleasant. Beach was beautiful and we loved getting in the ocean everyday. Service was great, and we appreciated all the food choices. They always had "American food", but there were many other unusual choices, as well. We loved the grilled grouper on the lunch buffet. The steak was delicious at the specialty restaurants. Daily drink of the day was really good at the beach bar! Wine was just "okay." Housekeeping and the rest of the staff did a wonderful job. Everything was very clean and tidy. Surprised that some people judge this place poorly. For the price, we couldn't believe how nice everything was. We did not leave the grounds all week. Had everything we need. We did suggest to the management that they just include internet in the price. Apparently, internet is a bit of an issue because this resort is further down the island. They are working on it. We will definitely be back!
