Believe the Poor Reviews

"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." We booked a stay at Allegro because we thought the website looked nice. Turns out we should have believed the poor reviews! Because of the orientation of the resort, there is little beach-front footage, making this area very crowded. Lounge chairs were 4 deep and were often quickly reserved by other guests. We paid for an upgraded room which was closer to the ocean and the pools, but we still couldn't really see the ocean from our porch. Our room was located in a building close to the main bathrooms. The sewer leaked into the lawn and smelled terrible. Both the sink and the shower in our room leaked. A trash can under the sink and towel on the floor outside of the shower took care of the leaks, but then you were left with a pile of wet towels. The front desk staff struggled to communicate with guests and were often talking to each other while people were waiting to be taken care of. When my husband became sick from the food at the resort, all information we were given said to call the front desk with medical needs. When I did so, they failed to explain that there was a medic on staff that could have helped us. It took us half a day to find the medical area on our own. The wireless for the resort was an extra charge. They didn’t have enough wireless codes available to last us the entire week, which meant we needed to purchase it twice, costing us almost twice as much. The food is as bad (or worse) than the reviews say. “Cold” foods were warm, “hot” things were, at best, luke warm. The fruit wasn’t ripe or very flavorful, which is disappointing for a tropical climate. (We did have other fruit on an outing that was delicious!) The meat was gristly and everything was just a bit off in taste, texture, or temperature. The fish from the Italian restaurant gave my husband food poisoning. Positives: The wait staff in the restaurants were friendly and helpful. They were usually on top of filling drinks and clearing empty plates. The cleaning staff did a good job. Each day they made the bed, restocked linens and towels, and the mini fridge. We did appreciate having a king-sized bed and mini-fridge that come with the upgraded rooms. The resort has a paramedic on staff that can get access to a doctor or any needed medication. He was very friendly and helpful, and spoke great English. He genuinely cared for the well-being of the guests he came into contact with. Overall, we would not recommend this resort to anyone. Renting a car and exploring the island off-resort was the best part of our vacation!

Really Nice time

Allegro did an amazing job. All the staff worked hard to make our trip enjoyable and memorable. Everything from the wait staff to the beach/dive staff were great. Our maid supplied us with coffee and water so well! The only thing I wish would have been a little different was the first welcome from the front desk staff. We had been traveling for 12 hours and we were really tired. I totally forgot about a required environmental charge that was only $8 US, but thought was $182--that was the Peso conversion. That was the confusion. I retrospect we have been to resorts where you sit down the grab you a quick water or lemonade and tell you about the resort. That would have been really helpful Other than that, which lasted all of 30 minutes of our stay, we enjoyed a beautiful place well maintained with excellent service. It was nice to have a smaller resort--only 300 rooms and a large beach area.

family resort

The resort itself was clean and welcoming. Check in was easy and the staff was friendly. The rooms were not as we expected but there was a hammock outside that was inviting. The bathroom shower didn't have a door so the water went all over the floor and our attached room bathroom shower was completely backed up. The maintenance staff was quick to respond to the issue but something we didn't want to deal with while on vacation. We had the all inclusive meal plan and the food was not as good as we expected. Lots of unknown foods in the buffet so we just stuck with the foods we were familiar with. We did join the Barcelo vacation club so we switched hotels on our 2nd day of vacation. I do recommend the Occidental hotel for your vacation.

Terrible Service

Cons: Failed to provide baby crib despite us requesting it upon booking. Every day they said they would provide one the next day. I asked for the manager a couple times but they said he was not there. I asked for who the manager reports to, they said they didn't know his contact information, and that I could wait at the front desk until the manager returned to the hotel, but it could take an hour. 2nd night the baby fell off the bed to the tile floor and busted her lip. I even asked if they could move us to a room with carpet but they said they only have tile floors. Sometimes had to wait in line 20 minutes to get seated for meals. After being seated didn't receive 1st round of drinks until after we finished eating a few times. 3 of the 4 of us got diarrhea and we only ate/drank at the hotel. They were out of beach towels the first 3 days of the trip. After that it was still very difficult to get one - you had to be there waiting when the new ones arrived or they were gone within seconds. They had no spots available on the beach the last 4 days of the trip (they had a lot of unused spots in the "solo members only area" and we tried to use those but they threw us out). The first day our older daughter wanted to use the kids pool / play area. We went there around 10 and it was closed. We waited about 15 minutes then left to do other things. We returned around 12 it was still closed but there was an employee there. I asked him when it would open, he said he couldn't say. I explained to him how we'd been waiting earlier and he just said there's nothing he could do but wait on the people to maintain the pool. We waited 15 mins again, nothing changed so we left again. We finally found the pool open around 3.30pm. After being sick and stuck in the room a couple days we wanted to buy internet access. Signs said it could be purchased in 1 day increments, but when we tried to buy that we were told we could only buy a week. I explained we only needed 2 days and that I wouldn't pay for more than that, but they said they could only sell it in 1 week blocks and they could not work out a deal. I again requested a manager but no manager was available and they provided no recourse. Pros: The lady working in the kids care area was very nice and good to our daughter. The resort is nicely landscaped.
