Potential to be great but distinctly underwhelming

We just returned from nine days at TRS Coral. Definitely some pluses and minuses so let’s start with the positives: We have stayed at most of the major AI resorts and our swimout room at TRS was our favorite. New, clean, modern, spacious and private. A perfect 10. The toilet and shower were fully functional and consistent with what you would find in a high quality hotel in the US. The housekeeping was top notch - consistent and thorough (thank you Vincent). The restaurants for dinner in TRS were decent to very good. The pool service for drinks was very good and consistent (thanks Juan) although we did tip early, often and pretty generously. The spa was large and offered a variety of services which we utilized. The free hydrotherapy circuit was nice but since it was free it was usually pretty busy which made the spa less tranquil in general than others we have visited. The biggest negatives are as follows: No buffet restaurant on the adults only side (TRS) for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We tried the buffet restaurant on the family side and it was chaotic and not particularly good. This lead to an increased reliance on room service which was poor to average at best. TRS relies on butlers to make reservations at restaurants/shows, coordinate special needs (I.e. preferences for drinks in room), advise which restaurants are open on a given day and to troubleshoot problems with the room. A great idea but in theory very ineffective in practice despite generous tipping. I think some of this had to do with the fact that the butlers were sometimes AWOL, constraints put on the butlers by the resort’s management and switching butlers to different areas after they had just become familiar with a guest’s preferences. I am not someone who dislikes figuring things out and doing things myself so to put too much information and control in the hands of a butler who may or may not be available was extremely frustrating. Wife- “Which restaurants are open tomorrow tonight?” Me - “Let me ask the butler” - which sometimes became something of an odyssey. As mentioned above room service was on the whole very poor. It could be ordered through an app on the TV but this was not precise and unreliable and always was followed by a telephone call to confirm (why not just call in the first place?). TRS also has a policy of not bringing wine to a room to enjoy with dinner unless you pay an additional $15 for the house wine which is free everywhere else on the resort. As mentioned there was no buffet restaurant on the TRS (adult side) of the resort. This resulted in the one restaurant that was open for breakfast being very slow. We waited between 35 and 50 minutes for pretty routine breakfast items and they were often tepid or cold when they arrived. This resulted in us opting on several days for a few very limited tasting tables in the breakfast restaurant to avoid the wait (bread, cheese, cold meats, juices, pastries, cereal etc.). The waitstaff in the restaurant was also stretched and so refills for coffee or tea were a catch as catch can commodity in most cases. The staff in the front office were often indifferent and on several occasions ignored us or were less than enthusiastic about doing their job or dealing with requests. The doormen/valets in particular were unfriendly and unhelpful which is highly unusual based on our experience. They also seemed more responsive to males than females - not sure what that was about but definitely something we noticed. In addition upon checking out we were not asked how we enjoyed our stay. A small detail for sure but again inconsistent with other resorts. Mini bar service was a joke (restocked two days out of nine despite repeated requests). We even brought our own drinks and snacks back to the resort when we went on excursions so that we had things for our room. Thank goodness for OXXO!!!! I wanted to give this resort top marks so badly. It has so many things going for it but I would not consider returning due to the issues mentioned above. Maybe the resort will make some changes and work out some of the kinks but I am skeptical. I came away with the distinct impression that the resort was playing the AI “hide the ball” game with its overall approach - evade, delay and get the customer to select cheaper and inferior options for food, drinks and service in an effort to boost the bottom line. Maybe this is becoming the norm but it definitely makes for a less enjoyable and relaxing vacation if you are constantly having to chase down things to ensure you get what to me is an acceptable level of service.

Worth the upgraded rooms

Great room. Spacious. Could have had more rooms see more of the ocean. Great service. Took a few hours to hunt down lost sunglasses. Great food options - so many. Food was above average at them but not 5 star. Chic was fun right at the resort. Closures for restaurants are a pain. The transit boat is a really cool touch. Would definitely recommend. Still new and has a few bugs to work out to be beat in class. Butler service and cart service could improve. We would definitely go back though.
