Worst honeymoon. Hotel ever!!

The room smelled like mildew upon arrival. It was a room that was very old and obviously remodeled with add-one. Are bathroom, even the toilet part was open to the whole room. No door. In the morning ants were all over the bathroom sink including our toothbrushes. I had bug bites all over me and saw little bugs on the wall. The shower would never get warm. Told the front desk, they sent a plumber up with new toothbrushes. Well the ants never went away and the shower was lukewarm at most. One morning we got up and the water was completely shut off for hours. No notice or reason why. No staff was too concerned over any issue. The maid never came until 4p. When I asked her when she was coming, especially due to the ant and bug infestation she appeared annoyed and told me at least an hour. She did a poor job and left coke cans and dishes outside our door and others for days!! The only positives I can say about this resort is that the French Restuarant was good, the staff at the manatee bar were friendly, and Antonio and Monica at the buffet were very nice. I’ve used cheap Caribbean a lot in the past and have stayed at secrets, excellence and other resorts. This was by far a 1 star resort. The only happy guests were the preferred members.

We thoroughly enjoyed our honeymoon at Secrets Aora, although he resort did not measure up to domestic 5 star expectations, the resort is not new. Upon arrival, our room had issues with the tv, ac, broken drawer in a utility table, and burnt out light bulbs. Since the room was so dark, upon our request a 2nd table lamp (so we had one for each side of the bed) and a standing lamp was furnished. The resort is aged, and such issues are not all that surprising. Room service staff was good, overall service was excellent, they were polite, accommodating, and eager to please. The food was of great variety and value, in 8 days we didn't exhaust all dining options. We enjoyed the quiet and relaxed nature of the resort. This was a first time in an all-inclusive for us and it was a great experience. The onsite availability of 2 free hour with snorkeling equipment per day, plus scuba diving & other activities will keep one as busy as desired.

Not Impressed

I am surprised to say, but I was really not impressed with my stay. My husband and I have been to numerous Secrets and Breathless locations (Riviera Cancun, Los Cabos, Punta Cana…) and enjoyed each one so much I made the mistake of assuming all sister locations were similar and booked without reading reviews. I don’t want to leave a novel, but here is a list of highlights, well, lowlights: 1. It’s an older resort, so décor isn’t the most up-to-date and there was a lot of construction going on, which resulted in some narrow walkways filled with drywall dust...but that was avoidable by taking other paths, so, no biggie. 2. Food – extra blah. I am a vegetarian, so the buffet is usually my go-to spot, but this buffet didn’t have the typical international assortment of foods. It was definitely geared to authentic Mexican cuisine with rice, beans, tortillas served at all meal times, and broccoli for breakfast... My husband and I did enjoy the Mediterranean restaurant. 3. Service was subpar – to remain with my thoughts on the food, the buffet never had enough serving utensils, which required guests to “cross contaminate” (pick up cheese, with same cutlery as the sliced meets and or fruits…some people don’t mind this, but as a vegetarian, it matters). What really took the cake when I got in line at the omelet station. There were 6 other people were in front of me, not a problem in general, but FOUR of them weren’t EMPLOYEES! I was flabbergasted. Lastly, we actually left a restaurant (barefoot grill) thinking they were closed because waiters kept walking around our table but not engaging with us…come to find out it wasn’t closed. To put it in one word, the staff isn’t attentive. The grill was also not the typical grab-and-go informal eatery as seen at other locations, there were 3 tables and if you didn’t have one, you couldn’t order. 4. Not sure what the hot water tank situation is, but there were many cold-water showers because the hot water would run out after like 5 min. Maintenance was not able to correct this issue. 5. This location is adult only and decently sized, but it IS adjacent to a Sunscape hotel that has children. The spa, gym and some of the evening “entertainment” were on the Sunscape side of the resort, so if you are planning on a fully kid-free zone, this isn’t the place for you. 6. Entertainment crew was rarely around and when they were, as I alluded to in #4, calling what they did “entertainment” is pushing it. Luckily my goal for this trip was to relax, so, once again, no biggie. None of these issues are deal-breakers on their own, but together, it made for a rather disappointing vacation, and many of the other guest we met on-site agreed with our assessment. With that said, it was not the worst place ever, and there are lots of pools and bars, but I will not be returning and wouldn’t recommend this location, although I am definitely not giving up on the AMResorts brand as a whole, based on past experiences at other locations.

What's to Love

The salvation of the cool towel and thirst-quenching welcome cocktail when arriving in paradise.

The sleek white, boxy architecture (very glam).

Hip suites with comfy beds that have private balconies or terraces and take-your-breath-away views.

Scuba diving at the epic Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and being awed by the fabled coral reefs.

You can take scuba lessons at the Dive House.

The candlelight dinner for two on the beach while the purr of the waves serenades you.

Snorkeling under the dock that boasts stingrays and parrot fish. (One beach lover even saw a barracuda).

The world-class spa with Seaweed Wraps, invigorating hydrotherapy and exotic indigenous treatments. Swoon.

A pier to wander out on and get hypnotized by the point where the blue water meets the azure horizon.

What We'd Change

Cozumel doesn't have as many activities as Cancun. After all, it is an island. But Secrets always has a lot of adult-only activities to keep you entertained.

Why You Should Go

You're just 15 minutes away from downtown Cozumel. Just a $15 (U.S. dollars) to cab it there.

The stunning sites of Chichen Itza and the Coba Ruins are a short hop away.

You can improve your game on an 18-hole golf course designed by the great Jack Nicklaus.

The largest beachfront in Cozumel is out back.

Dive into tons of water sports like kayaking, Hobie cats and water volleyball.

Bring your aqua shoes - the beach is like finely ground seashells.
