great weekend retreat

The resort was very clean and the our room was quiet and very comfortable. The staff was wonderful - very courteous and helpful. The downside of this resort is that there is very little to do at the resort. The only activity of the day seemed to be a foam party in the pool - which if you are not interested in, then....... And the write-up I read on-line said you could be bussed to sister resorts for evening shows - this was not the case with the basic inclusive package. You could attend but had to provide your own transportation. Bummer! The few inclusive services were quite limited and involved lines. Every day, you had to get to the beach before 8am to throw your towel/belongings on a chair - otherwise, there are all taken, especially those in the shade. There are only 3 restaurants that are included in the all-inclusive (not counting the buffet). The lines to get in are long. However, we thought the food was outstanding. And very different at each of the 3. The White Box tasting menu was incredible, however the portions extremely small - which is not a criticism. We actually liked it because we ate early and were not so full that we could not eat again! So, most nights we had an early dinner and then went to dinner again around 9! The sushi and ceviche and other seafood dishes were really good. Dinner at Las Carayes was different - plenty of food and again, the seafood really good. A gem of a find was the MakiTaco restaurant. Located in the back of the noisy nightclub made it a less obvious choice for dinner. But the dining area in the back was quiet and again, the food choices were wonderful. It did seem strange however, with as full as these restaurants were, there were two additional restaurants not included (significant uncharges) that were mostly empty! Saving the best for last - beverages! The drinks were typical of an all-inclusive and flowed freely. The wait staff wandered the beach and pool area and were very quick to bring whatever was wanted. The coffee bar, however, was outstanding! Hot, cold, or frozen coffees were so good, and the baristas were perfect! A great way to start, end and have in the middle of every day! We were only had 2 full days at the resort so were content to just relax at the resort. However, if our stay had been longer, we definitely would have need excursions or would have gotten bored with the beach

Do NOT eat the room service!!

With the price point being so low, we did not have very high expectations for this resort. Unfortunately, even the low expectations we had weren’t met. Upon arrival we upgraded to a master suite which came with some perks including a private area of the beach with cabanas, no service fee (which is $15 for other guests) for room service and an additional bar. The first day, unless you’re there before 9am you will not have a chance at getting a cabana because they have to be reserved at the concierge desk at 9am. There are only 10 cabanas in the private beach area which isn’t nearly enough for the amount of master suites there are. The extra bar that they advertise for “vip” guests is a weird bar in the office where you check in if you are an upgraded guest. It also closes at night. The actual room we got was pretty nice and the view was amazing. The balcony was a decent size and had a hot tub on it. The seats were plastic lawn chairs, so pretty cheap. The room was updated but the bathroom was dated and the tub felt squishy. There was water underneath the tub lining up which made it feel like you could fall through the floor at any moment. We ordered room service the first night, chips and guacamole and quesadillas. The quesadillas were soggy and disgusting so I really only ate some chips and dip. Within 15 minutes of eating it, I was having severe stomach pains and shortly after that I became violently ill and spent the night vomiting. Luckily, it only lasted that night and by the morning I felt better. The buffet was the worst we had ever been to. Daytime dining was a pain because it was like the staff was inconvenienced by guests wanting to sit down for lunch. They roped off the 2 pool/beach area restaurants everyday even when they weren’t full and made you wait in line to be seated or just said they weren’t seating tables anymore. The exchange rate when we got there was 16 pesos to $1usd. At least that’s what the hotel told us. When we upgraded they told us the total it would cost us for the upgrade in pesos and then used a calculator using their exchange rate and gave us the total in US dollars ($330) but when we checked our bank account it was charged $50 less than they said it would be. We looked up the exchange rate and it was actually almost 19pesos per $1usd so when they ran the card our bank automatically converted pesos to dollars using the correct rates. But when we had to get pesos to do excursions and local shopping we were getting far less than we should have been. When we asked the staff about it they said they went by the rate at the beginning of the week and used it for the whole week?!? We got there Tuesday morning so I can’t imagine the exchange rate jumped that much overnight. The resort is also advertised pretty hard as adults only, which it is. However, it’s sandwiched between 2 very family friendly resorts. So you’re sharing the outside area and the beach with tons of kids. Overall, the price is low so if you’re going to go because of that, just manage your expectations. I would recommend spending the extra couple hundred dollars and going somewhere else tho.

Good for the price

Place was good for the price, but would rather spend more for a better experience. Main problems with the place were the food wasn’t very good and the pools need to be better organized. Pretty much all of the poolside area consisted of cabanas, which people reserve at 6am every morning by throwing a towel on them and then going back to bed till noon. Even worse, some obnoxious people don’t even use them when they do get up and instead head to the beach. They really need to charge or something to kill this practice. Other issue with the pools is not enough bartenders for the number of people.

Wouldn't recommend

When I first checked in I was trying to upgrade my room the girl working the counter appeared to have no clue what I was talking about. I finally got someone that could take care of it after 30 minutes. The food was sub par at every restaurant in the resort and the beach front was minimal. I paid extra for premium liquor then was told at the bar that if I wanted anything better than Herradura blanco I would have to pay extra, when I inquired about shot of clase Azul I was told it would be $40 not pesos! It is $20 a shot in America so I understand having an extra cost but not double what I would have to pay here! I go to Mexico 2-3 times a year and this is my least favorite resort so far. In this price range I would prefer the Grand Oasis at least the grounds, beach, events and food were all good there.
