Disappointed!!!

This is a small resort with the potential to be elegant. It advertises to be so much more. This resort says it is all - inclusive, but it seems everything was an up - charge. To start with upon arrival I was taken to what I had requested - Diamond club ocean view junior Suite. The moment our "butler" opened the door the smell of mildew hit me in the face like a brick wall. My view of the ocean was quite impaired. We were on Second floor, bldg 3 there are no elevators. I told the Butler I was not satisfied with the room d/t oder mostly but also because I had paid for ocean view and I could barely see a sliver of the ocean, if I looked from an angle. He gave me a hard time but eventually moved us to another room in Bldg 2 view was not much better but the smell was not as strong. My husband had been told they would have cans of Budlight in the room mini bar, but there were none to be found at the resort - the fridge had 3 mini cans of Cours and 2 mini cans of Heinikin that is the allotment for the day. Other wise the only beer on resort is draft Presidente, The butler is suppose to unpack and pack for you, make restaurant reservations, iron your clothes and arrange for anything you may need. Our Butler, Mr. G, always answered every request with I don't think we can do that. The other staff tried very hard to make our experience comfortable. The butler that my friends had was able to make the reservations for us and have large tables set up for a party of 8 of us each nite at the time they requested. We paid an additional charge aprox $100.00us/day for a cabanna otherwise there was very little shade or seats avail. The Cabanna came with waiter service. That was nice, Jimmy our cabanna waiter was wonderful. Please plan to tip this is not a resort where tips are included and the staff work very hard. I often felt scolded by our butler for little things like leaving the do not disturb sign on the door the first day we were there. I found my self wishing he would just go away!! The grounds needed alot of maintenance. Food was ok concidering this is a Dominican resort but for the money we paid we expected 5 star as we are use too and found the resort to be 3.5 at best I am sorry but I would not be able to reccomend this resort.

Honest review

After reading some of the reviews, I was a little worried about staying here. I have been to 10+ other all inclusive resorts but never a Royalton resort. Here is my honest review. Because the price was right, we booked a diamond club swim up room. It was well worth it. We are not “high maintenance” people so the perks were nice and we had more than we expected. Our Butler’s Jesus and Johan were exceptional. Both went out of their way to help with my special request. Johan even gave us a special surprise in our room! Both would stop by the beach and pool to make sure everything was fine and see if we needed anything and to make sure we had our dinner reservations. Johan even made a point to find us to say goodbye and tell us how happy he was to meet us. Jesus came back a day early and left me a note in my room and made sure I had enough of my special request. The room could use some updates, but it wasn’t anything to make our stay bad. I did the online room selection so I was the one that made the mistake of booking the room that was looked at the side of the Diamond Club beach bar. Room 1101 is nice, and you do have an ocean view but you also look into the side of the bar. I would say it’s probably one of the most private swim up rooms but it is morning sun only. The Diamond Club has its own beach, beach bar, an area with upgraded snacks, even caviar and top shelf liquor., and it’s own breakfast restaurant. Again, in my opinion, well worth it. Most of the staff were awesome, friendly and the service was great. Diamond club beach service was spotty, but poolside service was amazing! Always asking for refills, making sure you had what you needed and even asked if we needed lunch! If you had to wait for your burger or lunch order, they would ask if you wanted it delivered to your lounge chair! The restaurants took some time, but not like some said. You would have enough time between servings that you could take a breath, but not enough to make you want to get up and walk out. Food was wonderful at the Italian and steak. Mediterranean was ok (my hubby loved it), didn’t do the others. The buffet was not terrible but it wasn’t the best I have had. They did a seafood night with crab claws and lobster. Drinks and bar service were good. I would recommend adding a few more top shelf choices. The swim up bartender Leonel was phenomenal. He was very welcoming and got the crowd involved. He went as far as getting all the people involved and talking between them. Because of him, we met a ton of additional people. Mind you, we have no problem meeting people, we met a ton on our own, but he really “worked” the crowd. Overall, it was a great vacation, don’t listen to the bad reviews. Here is my final take: Rooms: could use spruced up but not bad, nice showers, plenty of towels and mine was always cleaned daily and cleaned spotless. Maids were wonderful. Beach/Pool: clean, service was great at pool, spotty at beach. Ocean was rough, but you could get in and it was beautiful. Drinks were not watered down but not top shelf. Need many more chairs, people would put towels on them at 6 am...then not show up till 4 to use them. This isn’t the resorts fault, but recommend having a few stacks of extra chairs available. Restaurants: Most food was delicious, service good but could be very hot. Need to add air or turn it up. Entertainment: it was okay, your normal exercise/Zumba and poolside entertainment. The night time entertainment was above average, the Queen show was awesome. Bars: service was exceptional, could use a bigger variety of top shelf liquor. I had no complaints that they weren’t open long enough, like others...lobby bar till midnight, sports bar till after2... never closed early.. Check in: was very quick, but took a long time to get luggage. Overall: No, not a 5 star resort but a strong 4. Service was exceptional, food was great, rooms clean, but could use repairs, check in was normal. Also, no one stole anything from safes as suggested by other review, I kept track. Could leave stuff by pool or beach and never bothered. One guy left his IPhone at bar and the next day it was at the front desk. Yes, there was an occasional sewage smell but that is at every resort on an island. My only big complaint is chair availability, other resorts keep a stack of extra chairs, this needs to be done. Was at a strong 5 star in Cap Cana last year that cost 1,400 more so to me, this is economical 5 star resort.

Chic (ish) in Punta Cana

Hotel was nice however it had a few bumps and bruises you don’t see in the website/promo photos. (Chipped paint, nicked drawers, sketchy wiring, etc.) The room was a bit moldy smelling but it’s on the beach and understandable. Opening the doors when we were in the room really helped. We upgraded to the Swim Out JR Suite which gave us our own little pool off the patio which was lovely. However there is NO privacy between you and your neighbors and there is a heavily trafficked walkway directly in front so we felt quite on display. Our view from this area was a big wall and a potted Palm Tree. Eh. We didn’t spend as much time in our pool as we thought we would but it was nice. Unfortunately our room’s balcony had the “perfect” view into the men’s room so we got a daily show of men using the urinals. (And not washing their hands after.) Serious design flaw here... The upgrade did give us Diamond Club status which gave us access to our own Butler, a private Bar and Snack area, separate Beach and Bar area, our own Diamond Club Pool, and Spa access. Butler- Samuel!! He was AMAZING!!! He went above and beyond to make sure everyday was so special for us. Dinner reservations, special meal requests, sauna reservations, reserved loungers in the beach, coffee in bed, hot tub filled with roses and bubbles awaited us after dinner, and too many little things to mention. Samuel was the highlight of our trip!!! Bar & Snack Club- Omgosh this was a treat! Great alcohol selections and rotating snacks all day! Sweets, fruit, sushi, toasted sammies, etc... Homer was such a joy to see everyday. We hit up that Snack bar several times a day! Beach Bar & Area- Diana was our server and she was the best! She learned what kind of drinks we liked and kept them coming! We never had to get up other than to walk to the water or the bathroom! She was so sweet and fun and mindful of our alcohol intake. :) Private Mermaid Pool- Located on a rooftop it was a nice getaway from the daily pool party insanity! We didn’t spend much time up there tho. Spa Access- We were so surprised how big the spa was and how EMPTY! We used the Steam and Sauna everyday! The hot tub wasn’t very hot and the sauna was difficult to get super hot because it was so big but it was a lovely detox everyday. We did get a couples beach massage. It was ok. Not very deep or thoughtful bodywork but being on the beach was nice. However pool party dance lessons were pretty loud. The Chic massages we better than the Ocean Spa excursion we booked which was pretty terrible. Overall we had a great time! We felt safe and well taken care of by the Chic Staff and the beautiful Dominican People! We will return one day....
