Wonderful time

First time for husband and I at this resort. Had a great time. Rooms are a bit dated but clean. We certainly could have used a double sink but overall, we didn't mind since we were hardly in the room. Food was wonderful overall. One of the best buffets we have seen on any of the islands. My only complaint was the lack of top shelf liquor. Drinks at the pool were very watered down. I would bring my own next time. Overall, the facilities were great. People were so nice anywhere we went. We felt very safe and met some wonderful people. We would definitely return. My only concern is there is a building going up right next door. It did not affect our trip at all but I wonder if it will be completed by the time we would return next year as I imagine it might get noisy.

Probably Better Options for the Price

This is a difficult review to write because many things were inconsistent -- excellent and very poor at varying times. It is also difficult to understand the ratings because this is actually two separate resorts next to each other -- the Riu Palace (families) and the Riu Antillas (adults only). We stayed at the Antillas and I could see that the Palace is much more grand (marble, large and open common spaces) and new compared to the Antillas. If we had it to do again, we would have booked the Palace instead, but this review is for the Antillas. Also, Aruba is beautiful overall so I am not mentioning things that would be true for every resort on the island: The excellent: - Most of the food was above average for an all-inclusive. In particular, the food at the Arubian Restaurant and the Italian Restaurant were consistently creative, delicious and well-cooked. - Nice touches -- when we arrived, there was a towel swan on the bed with chocolate. - Typical swim up bar, pool and private beach - Entertainment was often excellent. The pirate show was nearly a Cirque du Soleil performance. - Service - Pedro at the Italian place and all the staff at the "fancy" restaurant were superb. - Lots of alcohol 24 hours a day -- There are four full bottles of liquor in your room and every meal has alcohol offered plus tons of bars. - Many newer or upgraded things -- rain shower, expanded curtain rod, etc. The bad: - The food at Palm Beach (the steak place) was much worse than the other restaurants - No gluten-free options. We picked this resort on purpose because someone had a video showing an entire gluten free area at the breakfast buffet. It didn't exist when we got there and staff said they haven't had gluten free bread in months. - Entertainment was strange... I really don't understand management's thinking on the entertainment. For example, the adults-only resort had a Pirate show and on another day, a circus show. The family resort (with kids in the audience) had a (horribly lip-synced) show with women in black leather than was completely inappropriate for the kids in the audience, but didn't have the Pirate or Circus show, which kids would have enjoyed. They also gave a schedule that did not include most of the entertainment (including an excellent singer who was randomly outside the Italian restaurant one day) and very vague explanations to the shows that were included ("Jump Show"). - Service. At the breakfast restaurant "Atlantis", it was buffet but the wait staff get your drinks. A waitress came up and politely asked what we wanted. We said "coffee and water" and started to get up to go to the buffet. Immediately, a waiter named Orlando jumped in front of her and said, "Actually, I am your waiter and I will get your drinks. I am here to make sure you have a great time and I will get anything you want. Can I get you a mimosa with fresh squeezed orange juice?" We said no and repeated that we only wanted coffee and water. We went to the buffet and my boyfriend saw the large selection of juices and decided to get grapefruit juice. When we came back to our table, we both had mimosas (which we clearly said we did not want) and then the waiter started screaming at him for getting his own grapefruit juice. "You should have told me and I would have gotten it for you. I get you everything. You don't need to get it. I am here to get everything you need and make things easy for you". We had an equally negative experience with the waiter at the Steak place, which leads me to the next bad thing: - Tipping. The resort is an all-inclusive and they say that you do not tip, but this is not enforced in any way. The employees are extremely aggressive about getting tips and if you do not give one, then you get ignored and receive poor service. - Housekeeping was inconsistent. The day we arrived, our room was dirty. There was sand all over the floor and the previous occupants had written on the mirror in hand lotion and it was still there. The second day, everything was cleaned, but they forgot to rinse the floor, leaving a sticky, tacky residue that stuck to the bottom of our feet even the next morning. The third day, the floor was rinsed and all was clean. So, overall, it was good, but considering the price we were paying, there were issues that I did not expect at that price.

Rooms need updating

The rooms here are very outdated. We also had alot of issues with the room itself. The beach and pools are great. Staff is great. Restaurants are good. Only complaint are the rooms. If you are going to stay here make sure you stay in the villas or on the family side with all new renovated rooms.
