Nice & Warm

Nice resort and surroundings, hospitable staff, good eating, and warm sunny days when it’s 20 degrees back home. We had a great time right after Christmas to NYE when we had to return to the cold. Would definitely come back!

Everything I had hoped it would be!

Everyone has their own priorities about what makes a good vacation (for us it’s the pools and the beach) but no matter what yours are this resort should have you covered! I will tell you off the bat that the rooms are underwhelming and dated so if that makes a difference to you you should be aware of that. We of course didn’t care because like I said, we’re beach people. As for the grounds and beach; the whole resort is laid out parallel to the beach in a long and narrow strip. I really loved this because no matter whether you were having breakfast on the veranda, lounging at any of the pools, or at the bar, you were always within sight line and earshot of the ocean. We visited the Riu Tropical on a exploratory walk one day and while their restaurants looked very nice I didn’t like the fact that you had to choose to be either up on the resort or at the beach. I only saw one pool, although I’m sure there’s more, but there was really no view of the ocean from there. We thought the food was great but talking about food is always difficult since it’s such an individual preference. I will tell you that the buffet was nice and there were always a lot of options so there would be something for everyone (even the easy “kid-friendly” favorites like pizza and French fries). The restaurants are first come first serve, no reservations. I had mixed feelings about this at first but you just need to understand a few things about it. I LOVED not making a reservation. I think that if I had been making dinner reservations along the way then my dinner plans would have determined too much of what I did that day. Not having a set time and place to be freed us up to do whatever came most naturally for that day. Imagine booking your excursions and having dinner reservations. No way! You’re on island time, mon! So here’s the thing - there is a first wave and a second wave for dinner. First wave seats btw 6:30-7. If you miss first wave DO NOT WAIT AROUND IN LINE! Everyone is served banquet style with each course coming out for the whole restaurant at the same time. So nearly everyone finishes around the same time and then they flip the restaurant for the second wave. If you miss first wave and are too hungry to wait, I promise you the buffet is great and different every day and sitting on the veranda gives you the same feeling of dining at the restaurants. Enough of that. The beach is in the bay which shelters it from much of the waves. Our strip is very long with nice palms and tropical trees scattered throughout which is perfect for the heat of the day. Some people complained about the patches of sea grass in the water but it’s crystal clear so you can just avoid those if you need to. I never made it to 7 mile beach but heard that beach was much nicer by comparison. Not sure what difference it makes but the resort beach here is private versus the resorts on 7-mile would be on public beaches. Be prepared for the beach guys! The locals looking to sell you cigarettes or bracelets or whatever you can dream of. They are allowed to be on the strip of beach along the coast until 6pm. They cannot travel up on to the beach more than 10 feet so if that is something that would bother you just choose a seat further up and they’ll leave you be. Please be kind to them. They are poor. They are literally just trying to earn a days living. Many of them are extremely nice if you give them your time. Also, if the “reggae band” comes up and plays you a song and lets you shoot pics and videos to show all your friends how cool you are - THROW THEM A FEW BUCKS!! Again. These people are trying to EARN a living. So I think that’s it. Entertainment was fair but they made a huge effort to get sun sleepy, half drunk/stoned guests involved each night which is a monumental task to take on so kudos to them for that. There are 3 pools that each have a different feel - swim up bar/dance party, family pool, and the chill/mostly adults reading pool. Think there were 5 bars. No walk around drink service but we like to move about anyways. There’s a reggae band that plays on Fridays and there was a beach party with a bonfire one night also. Skip the Ricks cafe excursion in favor of the Half Moon Beach day trip. You WILL NOT Regret it!! Overall I would definitely recommend and look forward to coming back!!

Everything I had hoped it would be! Everything I had hoped it would be!

Riu Negril Was Wonderful

The property was lovely, the food options were fine, but what really made this trip special was the staff on site. From the people who worked the front desk, to the housekeeping staff, to the entertainment crew-they were all just delightful. While Negril is a bit of a hike from the airport in Montego Bay, it was really worth it. And using Amstar for transportation to and from the airport was a good investment.

Good, not great unfortunately

Cons - 1. The beach. Lots of mud and seaweed, the other parts of Bloody Bay are MUCH more pleasant. 2. Hotel is quite big, residential buildings are somewhat separated from the restaurants and reception - if you forget something or room key does not work - makes quite a walk. However, there are pools and bars everywhere and everything is by the beach. 3. Plates in the breakfast restaurant were constantly smelly, all of them. 4. First come first serve for special restaurants for dinner is strange, why not make reservations ? Lots of lines and lots of tension. Pros - 1. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of water gear that is included - sailing catamarans, SUPs, kayaks - all for free. 2. Staff is very nice and friendly. 3. Rooms are very nice and having a free minibar is definitely a good touch

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The singing bartender. See if you can find him. He'll mix you up a high-octane cocktail.

Great bang for your buck for all the activities, entertainment and food and drink you'll get.

The service at Riu is the best. They keep everything clean and orderly. You will be spoiled.

Nightly entertainment keeps the party going at night. And into the wee hours, if you must.

The sunsets off the shores of Negril are some of the best. Get your cameras charged and ready for snaps.

The infamous Rick's Cafe is not too far - the cliff divers are awe-mazing.

What We'd Change

The omelet bar is favorite in the morning. Get in line early to avoid a long wait.

Why You Should Go

Getting to Negril will take you about an hour & a half, but it's so worth it. Beachy drinks are waiting.

Grab some locally made souvenirs in town. Your friends/fam will kiss your ring upon receipt.

The restaurants at night will fill up, so make sure to make your reservations a couple of days in advance.

Beach shoes are always a good idea, especially when you want to beachcomb your way up the shores.

Pay a little extra to get upgraded Wi-Fi - it will work even on the beach. You'll def want it there.

The One Love Bus Tour will pick you up at the resort and show off all the local night spots in Negril.
