First time in Jamaica

First I would like to say this place is amazing. The grounds are inviting and very beautiful. Most of the staff is awesome especially Erica who helped set up our excursions and our return trip to the airport. I was a little upset upon check in when I found out our room was not as I had booked and paid for almost 6 months ahead of time and was put in a room that was far from the pool and restaurants so we had to do a lot of walking which really flared up my sciatica pain. The gal at the front desk seemed put off that I wanted to get a better room and we were told they were full and no other rooms were available even though there were other people checking in after us. I thought if you booked so far ahead with specific rooms you would get them but apparently not. After 2 days of bugging them at the front desk I was able to get my pool/sea view room that was closer unfortunately we were only staying for 4 nights. Pool seemed pretty cold so we didn't use that as much as I would have liked and trying to get a lounge chair was almost impossible. You have to get up and out there before 8am to get a chair and although they say you cant reserve a lounger most were already reserved at that time. Richard our butler was super when we checked in and gave us some help on where things were and who to contact if we needed anything. Loved the restaurants, lots to choose from at the buffets and wasn't able to visit a few since we didn't have enough time and you have to make reservations. If we didn't have to do reservations for these restaurants we may have been able to dine there. The guys that did the carts that took you around the grounds were awesome too. I do wish we would have heard more Jamaican music while were there, Micheal Jackson group was good but wanted to see The Steel Drums, they were canceled. I can hear hip hop back home and wanted to hear more Jamaican music Overall I had a great first time in Jamaica and would love to return.

Most Disappointed

We had an unpleasant experience with the front desk manager, very unaccommodating. We did not receive the room we requested, we were stuck with 1 king bed and toddler twin bed. They were unable and unwilling to change the room, even when offered to pay for upgrade, was told the resort was full, which obviously it was NOT full. We also paid for airport transportation, well the transportation left us at the resort, we had to pay $100 for taxi, because the transportation agent told us to be in the lobby at 10:30a.m., we arrived at 10:15a.m. and the van had left us. The hotel and transportation agent did not get us to the airport, we had to hire a taxi on or own to get us there. They were not accommodating at all.

A wonderful place to get away

We just returned from a nine day vacation at the Luxury Bahia Principe at Runaway Bay. A glorious trip that I would definitely do again. We booked the Luxury instead of the Grand Bahia (they are co-located on the same property). Because we didn't want to deal with a lot of screaming children, the Luxury is adults only. First the good. The place is a tropical dream, lovely landscaping, warm, friendly people, the Caribbean right outside the window past the (several) pools. go all inclusive and drink your weight in fruity rum drinks or straight up Jack Daniels, the bars are VERY well stocked. The restaurants options are many and varied, we were there for 9 nights and only ate in one of the ala carte restaurants twice (because we liked it so well). The hotel itself is one of the cleanest, best maintained places I've ever been and I've been a LOT of places. cleaning and painting go on all day long, I saw a young woman literally washing down the short columns supporting railings. It rained for a while virtually every day we were there, and it didn't effect our enjoyment of the trip, that may be because we left Chicago to go there when the temps were in the teens Fahrenheit, but the staff works very hard to keep you entertained indoors or out, there are activities all day, every day. Some less good things. The place is freaking enormous, getting from one side to the other is going to take you some time and effort. The Luxury Bahia is on the East side of the property the Grand Bahia on the West the two are joined together. The majority of restaurants are located on the ground floor centrally located under the Grand Bahia. It can still feel like a forced march to get to your meals, if you aren't in good shape maybe think about somewhere smaller. There is a caveat however, if you go to the lobby you can get a ride in one of the many multi passenger golf carts that are constantly circulating during normal operating hours they can get you to outlying restaurants (the Garden Grill, Dolce Vita, or even Las Olas Rodizio) or to the shopping/entertainment area on the far east side known as "The Village". Some unexpected things. The Grand Bahia is larger than the Luxury Bahia, by a fair bit, but they share many amenities, the Spa and Gym are in the Grand and open to all, the ala carte restaurants are in the Grand as well except for the Brazilian Steak restaurant, Las Olas Rodizio. What I found odd is that if you stay at the Grand you may not cross the invisible line to the Luxury side of the resort, there are security guards all over and they check your (color coded) identifying wrist bands to see if you should be wherever you are. If you stay at the Luxury side you're good to go wherever/whenever you want. This result is that a lot of the Luxury guests could not get shaded seating at the smaller Luxury side pool, so they would head over to the Grand side, making it more difficult for the guests there to get good seating poolside. Same goes for the swimming beaches, the Luxury side beach is small and very protected by breakwaters to the point there is virtually no wave action in that area, if you want waves you have to go to the Grand beach area, where the same situation with seating is the case. We spoke with a couple from Canada about it, and they were a little bitter. Have you ever met a bitter Canadian? Up til this trip neither had I, but they were still polite. Cats. Jamaica has a lot of feral cats and there is a group on the Bahia property. You will find them begging for scraps at the outside dining areas near the two buffet restaurants in the morning and the in the Rodizio at night, they are not aggressive but they will sit nearby and watch you eat hoping for a morsel, they are happy to take things from your hand but I would recommend keeping a little distance because with wild animals you just never know. Other stuff. We took several side trips off the resort, Dunn's River Falls, shopping in Ocho Rios, and the Luminous Lagoon. All were great, the people fantastic, and everyone looking out for you to make sure you had fun. Watch out for the people selling stuff, they are a little aggressive in their sales technique. If you don't want it, say no thanks and move on they don't seem to take it personally, but until you do that they are going to be right up on you with whatever they're selling, that goes for the people on the resort in "the Village" as well as outside the resort. If you do want to purchase whatever they're selling be sure to haggle over the price, they expect it. Jamaica time, or island time. If you are in a rush to get things done you aren't going to like Jamaica. The people are wonderful but they operate at a much more relaxed speed. We never had a bus to an off site event show up late and they were always waiting when we got back, but the timing on getting back to the resort could vary from the advertised time by up to half an hour. Room service and Bellman services were rather lackadaisical as well. But what the heck, you're on vacation. One other thing. Outlets for electronic devices. Bring a two prong (or a three prong with a two prong adapter) outlet expander with you. I counted a total of four outlets in each of the two rooms we stayed in. One by the desk, which powers the lamp at the desk. One by the bureau which powers the coffee pot. One on one side of the bed, which powers the bedside clock, and one in the bathroom, which powers the hair dryer. My wife and I traveled with a Kindle apiece and our phones, We wound up living without the bedside clock, the coffee maker, and when several things needed charging simultaneously the desk side lamp. Not a huge deal, but I wish I'd had an outlet expander. That's pretty much it. we had a lot of fun and would definitely return in future.

Great resort!

This was my first time to Jamaica, and the resort did a fantastic job making my stay stress free. The employees are extremely friendly and nice. The amenities are of higher quality but the food was disappointing, even at the restaurants that required reservations. Do not come here if you want amazing food. I really loved my experience and would recommend this resort to my family.
