Horrible Experience.. stay away...

Traveled with family 2 kids age 9 and 11 respectively. Upon arrival at Melia Caribe tropical side, we were told to not check in in main lobby instead were directed to a big hall, where there was no sense of lines. It seem like you are checkin for a convention. After waiting of almost an hour we got assigned a check in person (David Gano). He seemed very nice, scanned our passports and he gave us 4 room keys. saying that we had two reservations, well that didn't make any sense. How come my two under 12 years of age get their own room. After some going back and forth he comes back and says that we do not have room that can accommodate all four of us in one room. If we want to have a single room than all he had was room with 4 twin beds which we can stay for just one night and following day he was willing to make adjustments. I was like okay let's not waste time and get to the real fun and we will see what he has to offer the next day..We took that room. Come next day we was assigned the room we wanted. But our location was horrible it was in building # 1 room 0109 ground floor and right in front of the train stop. During checkin process usually there is some offering for upgrades if we want to but in our case there was none, this was also disappointing.. In the room in bathroom we found a huge spider and following day there was a roach in balcony. Of course my wife freaked out, didn't made a big deal as was not in mood of spoiling my vacay.. Even though resort has so many restaurants , please be prepared for a long wait.. Resort also has kids zone, like sky walk, trampoline and rock climbing. The time posted were in morning 9-12 and in afternoon 3 -5 PM. We usually went there in afternoon.. The catch here is that you can use the sky walk only once per slot. Even though there are no lines the crew won't let you use it again, well that was disappointing, may be they might have their own reasons.. Also the rock climbing is only open from 3-4 PM even though in daily entertainment schedule it says open from 3 -5. So parents beware !!!! Beach has tons of seaweed which crew cleaned with huge construction vehicles in the middle of the day when beach crowd is at its peak.. If you are soaking yourself at beach under a umbrella, not a pleasant thing to gaze at while sipping margaritas. We were told that this cleaning process happens every day. I think they should do this cleaning part when beach is less crowded. But again who know they have their own reasoning... Have been to DR 3 times all in different resorts but overall I didn't find anything Wow about this resort and there was no sense of hospitality. We ran into other families and they felt the same.

Resort that offers a lot, but communication is key

I will start by saying we enjoyed our Stay at the Melia a lot, but there were a few negative experiences derived from poor communication. Check in was unquestionably the worst experience of the Trip.... it took us nearly 3 hours to get checked in, waiting in a loud ballroom, in a line that was not moving because "their system was down". We got extremely frustrated as the staff did not care at all about making you feel welcomed to the resort, and in several instances would pull parties out of line behind us and bring them up to check in with no explanation. It literally took me having to speak with the supervisor on site, and basically telling them if we didn't get service immediately that we were going to change resorts. After we FINALLY got checked in we were greeted by a beautiful environment filled with endless palm trees, water ways, and local wildlife. Through research I knew the Melia was big but you don't really realize how big till you actually get there and try an navigate. Walking is your most convenient option, however none of the roadways are labeled and it can make getting around a bit of a nightmare. They offer trains that can get take you around a resort which is a good option, but our preference was to find staff on golf carts and tip them to take us around. During our first evening we were overwhelmed as we were trying to understand where restaurants were, what was included in our package, etc. Additionally we tried to access an area of the resort called "The Levels" which is essentially a resort within the resort which offers adult only and upgraded amenities. This was something I inquired about during check in, but again got little to no assistance understanding what The Level experience got you and how we could access it. Finally after speaking to someone at the Level Lobby we decided it was an upgrade we need to do. If you are traveling to this resort without children and/or as a couple you MUST MUST stay in the levels section of the resort. After we switched to the Level our experience was mostly smooth sailing. We had access to a beautiful private beach with soft white sand and crystal blue waters, upgraded restaurants with great dining options, premium alcoholic beverages, and overall very nice amenities. The only other negative incident we encountered was surrounding the claimed "free golf" offered by the resort... they will give you passes to play, but the course isn't on the actual resort grounds, and they were very vague about this shuttle that can get you to and from that only runs once an hour, and then added fees associated with using clubs, cart, etc. We ended up blowing off the glof and just going back to the beach. Other that what was referenced, and after ther initial night our trip was enjoyable and smooth sailing. The staff were very polite, the grounds were well kept, the restaurant and food options were great, and the beaches and scenery were beautiful. I actually would recommend and personally return to the Melia, despite our issues, I would just say that you must do The Level Experience, and that you get check-in and room preferences resolved with the resort in advance.

What's to Love

Chillaxing on the sugar-white sandy beach, cocktail in hand, watching the azure waves roll in.

De-stressing at the two delicious spas that each have private gardens and Jacuzzis.

The food - travelers reports that everything, especially the steak and lobster tails, is crazy good.

Two ginormous, free-form pools, each with swim-up bars for your day drinking pleasure.

Dropping the kids off at Flintstones Land for daily fun and meals. Yabba-Dabba-Doo!

The grounds keeping staff who offer coconuts and cut them open, fresh for you to drink.

What We'd Change

It might be gorgeous, but this place is huge! That's why we love the complimentary shuttles that take guests around the resort.

Why You Should Go

It's just 20 minutes from the airport - you'll be basking in the warm Dominican sun pronto.

There's wave after wave of water sports: sunfish sailing, water bikes, kayaking, canoeing and more.

It's a worldwide taste trek with 33 nosh spots that include French, Japanese, Thai, American classics and more.

Adult beverages will be around every palm with the 10 bars you've got to choose from.

You can keep that rockin' beach bod with fitness center, tennis and a climbing wall.

Bring your A game because a 27-hole championship course golf is right across the street.
